There Will Be A New 'Hunger Games' Book & Movie Centred Around The Second Quarter Quell
Young HAYMITCH?
Today is a good day to be a Hunger Games fan!
Author Suzanne Collins has just announced a new prequel book titled Sunrise on the Reaping.
As if that wasn't exciting enough, The Hunger Games' social media account later announced that a film adaptation is already in the works, with the news being confirmed by Lionsgate, the film company behind previous Hunger Games movies.
It seems that we're finally getting a backstory for a fan-favourite character from The Hunger Games
Like The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Sunrise on the Reaping will focus on a pivotal Hunger Games well before Katniss Everdeen's time.
According to Scholastic on X, Sunrise on the Reaping takes place 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games.
"... starting on the morning of the reaping of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell."
AKA the year HAYMITCH ABERNATHY won
The Second Quarter Quell has long been a widely discussed topic among fans, who were teased with the events of Haymitch's games in the novel, Catching Fire.
While much of the new book's synopsis is clouded in secrecy, Collins had this to say about the new prequel:
"With Sunrise on the Reaping, I was inspired by David Hume's idea of implicit submission and, in his words, 'the easiness with which the many are governed by the few'.
"The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question 'Real or not real?' seems more pressing to me every day," she said.
Sunrise on the Reaping is slated for release on 18 March 2025.
Meanwhile, the movie is expected to arrive in theatres a year later, on 20 November 2026
The Hunger Games' social media account posted an official teaser poster for the upcoming second prequel with the caption, "Welcome to the Second Quarter Quell. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping — in theaters November 20, 2026."
Oh. Chills. Can you hear the Mockingjay tune already?
We know this book's not going to disappoint because Suzanne Collins never misses.
Safe to say, everyone's equally excited and overwhelmed by the double announcement.
