Malaysian Artists To Lead The Way To Turn KL Into A Creative And Cultural City

There's gonna be art installations, pop-up markets, artsy forums, and more as part of 'Art In The City 2019'.

Last year, the streets of Kuala Lumpur were taken over by huge stunning outdoor visual displays of artworks created by various local artists

The PNB building hosted three artworks by Dato' Mohd Hoessein Enas, Kok Yew Puah, and Syamsul Addenno.

This was done as part of 'Art In The City', a collaborative initiative between the Cultural Economy Development Agency (CENDANA), the Ministry of Federal Territories, and Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) which aims to raise greater awareness on the Malaysian arts and culture landscape.

'Art In The City' is back for its second installment this year and it hopes to engage the wider public and get you excited about Malaysian arts!

This time, 'Art In The City' will also include cool site-specific commissioned contemporary works never seen before on the Malaysian art circuit, a video competition, a fun pop-up market, as well as an interesting series of public art forums and workshops.

The theme this year is 'I heART KL', so take inspiration from our city's rich history and origins while creating your artwork! Don't forget to also explore new creative ideas that reflect us taking the steps towards the positioning of KL as a cultural and creative city.

'I heART KL' reflects on the potential and abilities of the artists to rework the possibilities of art in Kuala Lumpur. The call for ideas also hopes to invite artists to engage the public to be open to such works and to a landscape that is made different through the installation of these works.

Shortlisted artists will work with CENDANA and DBKL to bring your artwork to life at selected locations within the area of River of Life and KLCC. Don't worry, if you have a proposed awesome site for your work beyond the list, CENDANA and DBKL are open to it too!

Application Submission Deadline: 1 August 2019
Evaluation and Approvals: 2 - 23 August 2019
Notification of Successful Artists: 26 - 30 August 2019

Unleash your creativity and showcase a unique perspective of what makes KL special in identity, arts, and culture in a contemporary world. Use your very best video-making skills (you can even just shoot with your phone!) to weave a compelling story that celebrates and comments on the interesting narratives of our beloved city.

The Lucky Pao Market is a fun, family-friendly market that transforms Jalan Raja over a weekend during the 'Art In The City' campaign. The outdoor event programme hopes to bring the historic landscape of Kuala Lumpur to life with surprises, feel-good moments, and unforgettable experiences for the public.

The market will be the centre of activities in downtown Kuala Lumpur with installations of 'Art In The City' taking place within the areas of River of Life and KLCC Pocket Park.

Plus, make sure to catch all the various talks, forums, and workshops that'll be going on throughout the campaign period

CENDANA will also be organising a series of public talks during 'Art In The City 2019' with a focus on the role of arts and culture in public spaces.

The event will have panel discussions, workshops, talks, networking sessions, and more, bringing together experts to share their best practices and experiences within the country, regionally, and internationally.
