Renowned artist Ernest Zacharevic, known for creating some of Penang's most iconic murals, has recently been restoring his popular works

Ernest has been repainting three of his most famous murals: Children on a Bicycle in Lebuh Armenian, Boy on Chair in Lebuh Cannon, and Boy on a Bike in Lebuh Ah Quee.

The Lithuanian artist began the restoration at the end of September, carefully restoring the murals' original colours, with plans to complete the project by early October.

In an Instagram Story yesterday, 8 October, his wife, Sheena Liam, shared a glimpse of him restoring the Boy on a Bike piece, repairing and securing the bicycle.

Other videos show him pressure washing the walls, removing years of grime, and retouching the murals.

These murals, originally painted during the 2012 George Town Festival, have since become iconic landmarks, attracting tourists from around the globe

Commissioned by the Penang state government to restore them, Ernest's work aims to preserve the artworks' legacy and cultural significance.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai expressed his delight in the artist's agreement to refresh the murals.

Wong noted, "The murals, such as the famous Children on a Bicycle on Armenian Street, have not only become beloved landmarks but have also played a significant role in placing Penang on the world stage. The artworks have contributed to Penang's recognition as a hub for both colonial heritage and contemporary street art."

"We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Zacharevic for his willingness to return and restore these significant works. His contribution has had a lasting impact on Penang, and we are confident that the restored murals will continue to inspire visitors from all over the world," he said in a statement, according to the New Straits Times last month.

Ernest's work is highlighted in Lonely Planet's book on street art, which features extraordinary murals from 42 cities worldwide, including Banksy's stencils in London and Invader's mosaics in Europe

Wong emphasised, "The Penang government has always been a strong supporter of the arts and culture, providing an environment where creative expression can flourish. It is within this supportive atmosphere that these exceptional murals were created, and we remain committed to fostering a vibrant cultural and artistic community in Penang."
