If you're looking for your next beach holiday, consider one of these idyllic escapes where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of some of Johor's untouched landscapes.

1. Rawa Island

You've heard of Tioman, Perhentian, and Sipadan, but here's one unspoilt gem that should be on your bucket list.

Known as the 'Maldives of Johor' for its fine white sand beaches, Rawa Island is a charming, exclusive island with just two resorts.

Don't be fooled by its small size though, there are plenty of activities you can do here, such as snorkelling, kayaking, diving, hiking, getting a massage, or sliding down its popular slide!

It's about a 30-minute boat ride from Mersing Jetty.

Best time to visit: Between March and September.

Most of the resorts are on the main island, Sibu Besar, with plenty of secluded beach spots if you're looking for a peaceful holiday away from the crowds.

For the more active holiday-goers, the island has a variety of water sport activities, such as diving, snorkelling, jungle trekking, and mangrove swamp exploring.

It's about a 40-minute boat ride from Tanjung Leman Jetty.

3. Tengah Island

What was once a Vietnamese refugee camp during the '70s is now a beautiful holiday destination. Spanning just 3km in diameter, Tengah Island has around 10 serene and secluded beaches for you to relax at.

Many tourists visit this island to witness turtles laying eggs in July and August, as it's one of the very few breeding grounds for the Malaysian giant leatherback turtle.

4. Dayang Island

Well-known for its diving spots with depths of up to 25m, Dayang Island is especially good for beginner divers, as it's home to many different types of fish and coral.

Its clear waters and abundant marine life provide an exceptional spot for snorkelling and swimming as well.

It's about a three-hour ferry ride from Mersing Jetty via Kampung Tekek.

Best time to visit: Between April and September.

5. Aur Island

Get a glimpse of what paradise may look like by heading to Aur Island. Though this island is pretty far from Peninsular Malaysia, it's worth it if you're looking to avoid crowds and enjoy crystal clear waters.

Several reviews say that it's a little hard to get reception here, so be prepared to completely unwind and switch off from the world.

It's about a three-hour ferry ride from Mersing Jetty.

Best time to visit: End of May to early September.

6. Harimau Island

Harimau Island, which translates to Tiger Island, has been said to derive its name from its silhouette which resembles the animal when you look down on it from the sky.

Grab your shoes and trek up the island's long staircase that leads to a lighthouse. From there, you can overlook picturesque views of the island. There's also a popular, giant cavern with a private pool where you can swim in turquoise waters.

As there are no resorts on the island (the nearest resort is on Rawa Island), Harimau Island is more of a day-trip spot for island hopping, scuba diving, and snorkelling.

It's about a 52-minute boat ride from Mersing Jetty.

Best time to visit: Between April and September.

Home to an extinct volcano, Mount Semundu, adventurous visitors who want a challenge can hike to its peak, which is 600m above sea level (about a three-hour hike).

There are two resort options on the island. Some activities include kayaking, snorkelling, and jungle trekking to a small waterfall nearby.
