Sunway Students Are Changing Lives One Shoebox At A Time With Their Unique Initiative
The students help supply clean water filters to Orang Asli families, many of whom lack access to safe drinking water.
Sunway Student Volunteers (SSV), one of Sunway University's largest and most impactful student organisations, embodies the spirit of meaningful change
With a membership of approximately 1,000 students, SSV operates under four key pillars — Community, Health, Wildlife, and Environment — all aligned with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Their initiatives highlight a commitment to creating sustainable change, and this year, their signature project, The Shoebox Project 2024, stands as a testament to their evolving mission of quality over quantity.
What began in 2015 as Shoebox Christmas has grown into a dynamic annual campaign that touches lives across Malaysia
Rebranded this year as The Shoebox Project 2024, the initiative has shifted its focus to create more significant, lasting impacts. By providing fewer shoeboxes but maximising their value and sustainability, SSV is stepping up to address critical issues in underprivileged communities.
Among its key beneficiaries are B40 families, orphans, the OKU community, and Orang Asli villages.
The initiative's hallmark this year is its fundraising effort to supply clean water filters to Orang Asli families, many of whom lack access to safe drinking water. This endeavour not only addresses waterborne diseases but also strengthens the wellbeing and dignity of these communities.
This year's project is designed to coincide with global observances and local festivities such as World Children's Day and Deepavali, ensuring that each contribution resonates deeply with its recipients
Shoeboxes filled with daily necessities, educational materials, and small gifts bring joy and relief to children in refugee schools, orphanages, and underserved areas.
But the project goes further. SSV aims to provide infrastructure and tools that will leave a lasting legacy.
For instance, they are funding a mini library for Praise Emmanuel Children's Home, offering children the joy of books and learning. Meanwhile, a projector donation to the Myanmar Refugee Kids Tuition Project will enhance educational opportunities for displaced children.
Beyond the shoeboxes, the charity bazaar adds a unique dimension to the project
Scheduled for 5 December at Sunway College, the bazaar not only raises funds but also creates a platform for NGOs and marginalised groups to showcase their crafts and services. This initiative empowers these communities by fostering income generation and public awareness.
SSV's Shoebox Project 2024 reflects a maturing perspective on volunteerism
It embraces the idea that impactful change isn't about grand gestures but thoughtful, strategic actions. With goals tied to SDG 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequality), the project demonstrates how students, armed with vision and compassion, can contribute to long-term, meaningful development.
By addressing the needs of diverse communities — whether through clean water, education, or moments of joy — SSV not only spreads hope but inspires others to take action. In doing so, they prove that anyone, no matter their resources, can make a difference. For Sunway Student Volunteers, the journey to create lasting impact is just beginning.
