A former civil servant endured a two-hour courtroom session yesterday as prosecutors read out 146 corruption charges totalling RM183,500
Saifol Nizam Mat Zin, 49, pleaded not guilty at the Ipoh Sessions Court to all counts of allegedly accepting bribes when the charges were read yesterday, 25 June.
According to Harian Metro, the former assistant engineer at the Kerian District and Land Office is accused of accumulating RM183,500.
Saifol is alleged to have received the cash from a 36-year-old contractor, with the transactions said to have taken place between 3 January 2022 and October 2023, according to the charges.
The prosecution said Saifol received RM103,800 in 2022 and RM79,700 in 2023
Each individual transaction allegedly ranged between RM500 and RM2,000.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) noted that the funds came from a contractor operating within the district.
The prosecution initially requested a bail of RM146,000, calculating RM1,000 for each charge
However, the defence argued for a lower amount, citing the accused's current monthly salary of RM6,000.
Defence lawyer P Ravee said Saifol now works in a different department, earns a modest salary, and supports three school-going children. Taking this into account, judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi set bail at RM50,000 with one surety.
Saifol Nizam must also report to the Ipoh MACC office on the first Friday of every month until the case concludes.
He has since posted bail. The Sessions Court set 26 August for mention for the submission of documents.
