A co-curricular session at a secondary school in Melaka turned chaotic after a Form 1 student allegedly chased three schoolmates while holding a knife
According to the New Straits Times, the incident happened at about 3pm on Thursday, 9 July.
The student reportedly chased three schoolmates from the school hall to the school surau before teachers and prefects managed to surround him, calm him down, and confiscate the weapon.
Preliminary investigations found that the 13-year-old student had become angry after allegedly being repeatedly bullied by classmates who threw ice cubes at him
According to Alor Gajah district police chief Supt Ahmad Abu Bakar, the incident occurred during a student attendance appreciation programme in the school hall, reported Harian Metro.
Ahmad said two male students, aged 13 and 14, had repeatedly thrown ice cubes at the suspect before he allegedly took a penknife from his pencil case.
"Unable to control his anger, the suspect took a penknife from his pencil case before chasing one of the victims for about 50m towards the school's surau.
"The two other students who were with the victim also fled, fearing they would become targets. The incident was captured on the school's CCTV cameras," Ahmad said.
A teacher who witnessed the incident reportedly acted quickly and managed to persuade the student to put down the penknife before anyone was hurt
No students or teachers were injured, and the three victims returned to the school hall after the situation was brought under control.
The student's family was then called to the school before he was taken home.
Ahmad said police investigations also found that all of the students involved have disciplinary records dating back to the beginning of the current school year.
Police added that the student is currently receiving treatment at the Psychiatry and Mental Health Department of Melaka Hospital
The student's most recent follow-up appointment was on 3 June, and the school was aware of his condition.
Police said a teacher has lodged a police report about the incident at the Durian Tunggal police station.
The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.
