Over the weekend, a photo of Prangin canal in Penang went viral on social media because of how clean it looked

Its caption read:

No, this is not Japan, yes it is in Penang, this is how clean the river is now. Well done to the Penang state government and to Penangites who stopped throwing rubbish into the river. God bless.

The post has received over 9,800 Facebook shares, since it was posted on 27 July.

Although the canal appeared to be sparkling clean with fishes swimming in it, many questioned if the photo was real

Several people have since pointed out that the actual dirty water was being diverted elsewhere

Apparently, the river was 'clean' because the longkang water was being transferred to a separate pool next to the canal.

However, others have revealed that it is a new purification system, where the drain water is filtered before it is released back into the canal
