A 77-year-old volunteer school teacher has been arrested in Alabama in the US after police said he repeatedly struck a young student during an argument over Pokémon cards

Officers responded to Jerry Lee Faine Elementary School in the city of Dothan on 31 August following reports of an altercation between an adult volunteer and a child under 10 years old, according to the Dothan Police Department.

Investigators identified the volunteer as Oscar Truitt Jr. The dispute reportedly began at school when Truitt became involved in a heated argument with the young student over popular collectable trading cards.

School resource officers quickly responded to the scene to secure the area

Investigators later reviewed internal security camera footage to determine what happened during the incident. Police said the surveillance video clearly showed Truitt striking the child several times during the confrontation.

Following the review, officers placed Truitt under arrest and charged him with harassment before booking him into the Dothan City Jail.

The Dothan Police Department emphasised that children's safety remains its top priority

"The safety of students is the top priority of the Dothan Police Department's role in Dothan City Schools," said police chief William E. Benny.

Authorities have not revealed what started the fight over the cards, nor which specific Pokémon cards were involved in the dispute.
