Family Meets Racist Vendor Who Refuses To Sell Ice Cream To Indians
"My aunt went to buy ice cream, and you know what he said? He said he doesn't sell ice cream to Indians," said the TikTok user.
A Malaysian woman recently recounted how she met an ice cream vendor who refused to sell ice cream to her family because they are ethnically Indian
In a video uploaded on TikTok by user @preeyangka23 over the weekend, the woman said her young nieces and nephews wanted to buy ice cream from a vendor on a motorcycle while they were having a picnic at Pantai Remis, Kuala Selangor.
"My aunt went to buy ice cream, and you know what he said? He said he doesn't sell ice cream to Indians," she narrated.
The woman said her family was shocked by the trader's words, and asked him why he did not sell ice cream to Indians.
The trader told the family that he recently got into a fight with a group of drunk Indians
The ice cream vendor then pointed to a police report he made about the fight, which had been pasted on his ice cream stand.
"That's his reason why he doesn't sell ice cream to Indians. This is the police report and his excuse for not selling to Indians. And he's Malaysian too," pointed out the woman, while showing a photo she took of the police report.
The woman said her family tried to reason with the man but he still refused to sell them any ice cream, even after they explained that it was their young children who wanted to eat ice cream, not a group of drunks.
"The man insisted it until the end, guys. We could not get ice cream for the kids," she said.
Fortunately, in a contrasting act of kindness, the woman said a Malay man nearby overheard their exchange and bought ice cream for her nieces and nephews
"There was a Malay family sitting across from us, and I think the man felt sorry for us. He walked over and bought the ice cream for my nieces and nephews.
"A big shoutout to the Malay family," she said.
The woman added that she posted the video not to incite hatred, but to raise awareness and teach people not to stereotype others based solely on their race
"It's heartbreaking that we still have this stereotype in this day and age. Just because of a few irresponsible Indians, others have to pay the price.
"I hope we can all change for a better Malaysia," she said.
The video has since gotten over 150,000 views on TikTok, with netizens sympathising for the woman who faced such discrimination and being grateful that the other family was around to help them
"It's so very very unfortunate that he's being extremely prejudiced to such an extent," said a TikTok user.
"Very sorry your family had to endure this. And a big thanks to the Malay family that showed the Malaysian spirit," said another.
A netizen echoed the woman's sentiments, saying, "There is always good and bad people in every race. We just need to be kind and good to others, this is what I'm doing too. Keep it up, we need more people like you and the Malay family to make a change."
Preeyangka told SAYS that after her video went viral, a few MIC members approached the ice cream vendor and advised him to apologise to her.
She said he has apologised and promised not to do it again.
