Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced several new initiatives aimed at supporting gig economy workers and job seekers during the tabling of Belanjawan 2026
Recognising that many self-employed individuals, especially the youth, struggle to make contributions for their social protection, the government is introducing the i-Saraan Plus scheme.
Under this scheme, gig workers such as e-hailing and p-hailing drivers will receive a matching contribution from the government for their Employees Provident Fund (EPF) savings. The government will match up to RM600 a year, with a lifetime limit of RM6,000.
The existing i-Saraan scheme for other informal sector workers will also continue, with a government matching contribution of up to RM500 a year, or a lifetime limit of RM5,000
Following the Gig Workers Act 2025, which mandates Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) contributions, the government has agreed to subsidise the payments.
For first-time registrants in non-mandated sectors, the government will cover 70% of their Self-Employment Social Security Scheme contribution. This incentive will be reduced to 50% in the second year.
In a separate move to encourage labour mobility, PERKESO will provide a one-off incentive of up to RM1,000 for new graduates or job seekers who need to relocate for a new job.
