The Federal Government will fully waive entertainment duty on local film and theatre ticket sales across all Federal Territories beginning in 2027
During the 2027 budget tabling, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the Finance Minister, said that the tax exemption framework forms a strategic push to invigorate the national creative industry, lowering production overheads while making cultural performances more accessible to the public.
By removing the tax burden, local filmmakers, theatre directors, and production houses can retain higher profit margins to reinvest in larger, higher-quality national productions
The Federal Government has also urged state governments nationwide to adopt similar tax exemption frameworks to ensure cohesive support for the broader creative ecosystem.

By lowering the cost of locally produced arts, watching local films will no longer be an expensive activity for those in Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya. This boosts the domestic arts industry and helps it compete against foreign film releases and international stage productions.
