King Appoints Tun M To Continue As Interim Prime Minister After Accepting Resignation
Dr Mahathir will continue to serve until a new PM is selected and a new Cabinet is formed.
Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's resignation as the Prime Minister has been accepted by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah on Monday, 24 February.
However, the Agong has appointed him to continue as the interim PM.
In a statement, Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali said the Agong has accepted Dr Mahathir's resignation for the post of Prime Minister.
"However, His Majesty agreed to appoint Dr Mahathir as interim prime minister while waiting for the appointment of a new prime minister in accordance with Article 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution," the statement read.
"Therefore, during this period, he will manage the governance of the country until a new prime minister is appointed and the cabinet formed."
Previously, a local news site reported that Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail could be the nation's first woman prime minister
According to anonymous sources quoted by Malay Mail, Dr Wan Azizah was assigned as an interim prime minister after Tun Dr Mahathir's PPBM party opted to leave the ruling Pakatan Harapan administration.
However, no official announcement was made about the position.
