Japan Invites M'sians To Apply For Their 2024 Undergraduate & Postgraduate Scholarships

The Japanese government is inviting Malaysians to apply for their 2024 MEXT scholarship programmes for a chance to study in Japan next year

The Embassy of Japan in Malaysia announced that there are three types of scholarship programmes open for Malaysians to apply this year.

The undergraduate and specialised training college scholarships are targeted towards SPM leavers, while the postgraduate scholarship is targeted towards Malaysians under the age of 35.

Applications are open from now until 5 May 2023.

The scholarships cover monthly allowances, all tuition and examinations fees, as well as a round-trip flight ticket to Japan

During the term of the scholarship, the embassy said undergraduate and specialised training college grantees will get a monthly allowance of JPY117,000 (approximately RM4,000), while JPY143,000 (RM5,000) will be given to postgraduate grantees.

Here are the three MEXT scholarship programmes available:

1. Undergraduate Studies

This scholarship is for a five to seven-year-long Bachelor's degree course beginning April 2024.

Criteria for eligibility:
– Applicants must be between 18 and 25 years of age, as of 1 April 2024.

– Applicants must have completed SPM with at least 11 years of formal education. Students who have completed STPM, UEC, Matriculation, or Diploma may also apply with their results.

Applicants must have at least 9As (A+ or A) in SPM, including in English, Mathematics/Add Math, Chemistry, and Physics/Biology, depending on their course.

– Applicants must have a good command of English or Japanese with excellent results in other major subjects.


The government is looking for students with an interest in the field of:
Natural Sciences (such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Agriculture, Food Science, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Medicine, Dentistry, etc)

Social Sciences (such as Law, Politics, Pedagogy, Sociology, Literature, History, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Japanese Language, etc)

2. Specialised Training College

This scholarship is for a three-year-long Diploma course beginning April 2024.

Criteria for eligibility:
– Applicants must be between 18 and 25 years of age, as of 1 April 2024.

– Applicants must have completed SPM with at least 11 years of formal education. Students who have completed STPM, UEC, Matriculation, or Diploma may also apply with their results.

Applicants must have at least 7As (A+ or A) in SPM, including in English and Mathematics.

– Applicants must have a good command of English or Japanese with excellent results in other major subjects.


The government is looking for students with an interest in the field of:
Technology
– Personal Care and Nutrition
– Education and Welfare
– Business
– Fashion and Home Economics
– Culture and General Education

3. Postgraduate Studies

This scholarship is for a one-and-a-half or two-year postgraduate course beginning April 2024.

Criteria for eligibility:
– Applicants must be under 35 years of age, as of 1 April 2024.

– Applicants must be a Bachelor's or Master's degree holder with a minimum CGPA of 3.4 and with 16 years of formal education. Students who are in their final year of studies at their respective universities are also eligible to apply.

– Applicants who are civil servants must apply through Malaysia's Public Service Department (JPA) under their 'Penawaran Dalam Perkhidmatan' management unit.


The government is looking for students with an interest in the field of:
Humanities and Social Sciences (such as Literature, History, Aesthetics, Laws, Politics, Economics, Commerce, Pedagogy, Psychology, Sociology, Music, Fine Arts, Business Administration, etc)

Natural Sciences (such as Pure Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Fisheries, Pharmacology, Medicine, Dentistry, Home Economics, etc)

The applicant's area of study must be in the same field that the applicant has studied or worked in previously.
