The Johor government has announced 6 January a one-off public holiday for civil servants, intended to facilitate the state's transition to its new Saturday-Sunday weekend schedule

According to The Star, the Johor State Secretary Office's Human Resources Management Department declared the special holiday in an official circular on 23 December.

The circular states that the special holiday this coming Monday is to assist civil servants in transitioning from the last week of 2024 to the first week of 2025, as they would otherwise be working six consecutive days, including Friday, 3 January.

"The Johor government has agreed to fix 6 January as a special replacement holiday only for civil servants in the state in view of the transition period for the weekend shift," Johor state executive council member Lee Ting Han confirmed to The Star.

Schools in Johor will also be closed on 6 January, but the ongoing Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations will proceed as planned

According to the New Straits Times, Education director-general Azman Adnan said examinations for English and Tasawwur Islam on Monday will take place as scheduled.

"Candidates will report to their schools, and exam personnel, including teachers, will carry out their duties as usual," he said today, 2 January.

He added that the Johor State Education Department would arrange replacement leave for teachers and staff required to work on that day.
