Enforcement officers from the Kedah Road Transport Department (JPJ) impounded a Mercedes-Benz owned by a Bangladeshi national during a targeted crackdown, dubbed Ops Luxury, along Jalan Padang Matsirat

The 38-year-old suspect, who works as a local vegetable farmer, was intercepted while transporting farm produce to a wet market in Padang Matsirat, according to Berita Harian.

Kedah JPJ director Stien Van Lutam confirmed that questioning revealed the foreign national had been driving the car since 27 May 2025.

Although the suspect insisted that he owned the vehicle outright, he refused to disclose the actual purchase price to investigating officers.

Subsequent inspection exposed a string of regulatory offences; the driver possessed no valid driving licence, while the vehicle's Motor Vehicle Licence (LKM) and compulsory insurance coverage had both expired on 26 July

Authorities immediately impounded the vehicle under standard statutory provisions for further legal action.

"Owning a luxury vehicle does not grant anyone immunity from the law," Stien said in a statement.

"Every driver and vehicle operating on public roads must strictly adhere to established traffic regulations," he added.

Under Section 26 of the Road Transport Act 1987, driving without a valid driving licence carries a maximum fine of RM3,000, up to three months' imprisonment, or both upon conviction

Additional penalties apply under Sections 15 and 90 for driving with expired road tax and without insurance coverage. JPJ officers confirmed that unannounced spot checks will continue throughout Kedah to uphold road safety standards.
