A lightning strike during a FA Golok Cup match in Thailand killed a Thai footballer and injured a Malaysian player yesterday, 4 August
According to Berita Harian, the incident occurred at about 5.30pm when lightning struck the Santiphap Stadium in Sungai Golok, Narathiwat, during the semi-final match of the tournament.
Sungai Golok police chief Colonel Thun Sirikhunt said heavy rain began falling at the end of the match between SAMCOLTS and Abu x Nong Sirin before lightning struck the middle of the pitch.
"The incident resulted in one death and 12 others being injured.
"Police officers immediately went to the scene to examine the injured and, together with a doctor, conducted a post-mortem examination on the deceased in accordance with legal procedures," he said when contacted last night.

The deceased was identified as 22-year-old Yala FC winger Sofwan Awae.
The injured victims were taken to Sungai Golok Hospital for treatment, while police are investigating the incident.
