A Malaysian couple shared a strange banking incident after discovering a series of unauthorised transactions on one of their bank accounts shortly after the wife answered a silent call from an unknown number

The husband recounted the incident in a Threads post, saying it happened at around 7.20pm on Monday, 29 June, while his wife was at work.

According to him, she received a call from an unfamiliar mobile number and answered it, but there was no response. After about five to 10 seconds of silence, the caller disconnected.

A few minutes later, notifications from her banking app began appearing, showing money leaving the account.

As she was still at work, she only noticed the alerts at around 8pm before immediately contacting the bank.

The husband said the bank activated its 'Kill Switch' feature, blocked her bank card, and informed them that an investigation would be carried out, adding that recovery of the funds was "50-50".

"Within an hour, the money I earned from two days of doing Grab was gone," he wrote, saying he decided to share the incident to warn others.

The police report said the transactions took place shortly after the phone call

The couple also shared a copy of a police report lodged on the same night at the Jelapan police station in Ipoh, Perak.

According to the report, the woman received the call while working at a veterinary clinic before noticing several unauthorised transactions roughly a minute later.

The report stated that she contacted her bank immediately and was advised to lodge a police report to assist with the investigation.

According to the husband, his wife hadn't clicked on any suspicious links or installed any apps

He later posted another update saying his wife had already been issued a new bank card and had set up a new online banking app.

According to him, the bank informed them that the transactions were related to a "pre-transaction" process, where money briefly entered and left the account.

He said the bank also assured them that the issue should not recur with the replacement card and that the money would be returned, although no timeline was provided.

Transaction history shared in the update appears to show the original Shopee charges alongside corresponding reversal entries, suggesting the disputed transactions had been offset.

At the time of writing, there is no official confirmation that the silent phone call directly caused the unauthorised transactions.

The bank's investigation into the incident is ongoing.
