A group of Malaysian tourists visiting China has sparked backlash online after reportedly sending 1,200 parcels to their hotel for collection

The incident came to light after the travel agency handling the group shared a video on Xiaohongshu with the lighthearted caption, "When Malaysians visit China, is shopping all you do?"

The video showed hotel staff members sorting and distributing hundreds of packages piled up at the lobby and front desk for collection by the guests.

One clip even showed a member of the tour group using a large plastic bag to carry parcels back to their room, saying they had purchased over 50 different items on Taobao.

The video has since been deleted.

A quick search on Xiaohongshu suggests that the practice is not uncommon among Malaysian tourists visiting China

Many other Malaysian users have shared tips and guides on how to have online purchases delivered directly to their hotels, expressing excitement over the convenience of shopping for Chinese products during their trips.

However, the video quickly drew criticism from Internet users, many of whom felt the practice had gone too far

While several commenters said sending a few online purchases to a hotel is generally acceptable, they argued that using hotels as parcel collection centres placed an unfair burden on staff.

"This is so excessive. Unless they paid an extra fee when booking the hotel, this is truly unreasonable. The extra workload for the staff is just way too much," wrote one netizen.

"This really isn't funny. Collecting a few packages is fine, but over a thousand? The hotel staff basically got stuck with an unpaid part-time job for no reason. If this happened abroad, people would have been blasted for having no manners a long time ago," another commented.

"1,200 packages is honestly wild. I just hope they gave a tip, because this completely exceeds the scope of services a hotel provides," said another user.
