A video of a man standing on a table and urinating into a hot pot at a Haidilao branch in Shanghai has gone viral on social media
The original video, which has since been removed, has been reposted and shared online numerous times by Chinese netizens on platforms such as Douyin and Weibo on 6 March.
In the video, laughter can be heard in the background as someone records the man peeing into the restaurant chain's four-grid hot pot, reported 8 News.
After the video went viral, Haidilao issued a statement saying it had reported the case to the authorities and would take legal action against the individuals responsible regardless of whether it was staged.
The culprits, two 17-year-old boys identified as Tang and Wu, were arrested on 8 March
Police investigation found that Tang and Wu, who were inside a private dining room in the early hours of 24 February, were intoxicated at the time of the incident. Wu reportedly shared the video online, contributing to its rapid spread.
"Currently, the police have imposed administrative detention on Tang and Wu in accordance with the law," the Huangpu Branch of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau said in a statement.
Haidilao has since replaced all hot pots and tableware, including chopsticks, at the affected branch
The branch has also conducted a thorough cleaning and disinfection of the premises, pledging to enhance its service protocols in private dining rooms.
Haidilao issued another statement condemning the perpetrators' "unethical and illegal behaviour", saying it would pursue legal action against them.
"Given that the people involved are minors, we call for avoiding improper dissemination or attacks on them personally and their families, giving them the chance to learn their lessons and grow," the company said.
