Landlord Sexually Harasses Prospective Tenant While Arranging Unit Viewing In PJ
The victim told SAYS that the unit was listed for rent at RM1,400 per month.
A woman's search for a rental unit in Petaling Jaya took a disturbing turn when she was subjected to sexual harassment by a landlord on WhatsApp
The woman shared her experience through an anonymous account on Reddit yesterday, 27 February, hoping to warn others about the potential risks of dealing with landlords online.
The woman was interested in a unit listed on a local rental platform and contacted the landlord directly on WhatsApp, as instructed by someone in the platform's chatroom.
Initially, their conversation was professional, with the woman asking about the apartment's facilities and accessibility to public transport.
During their discussion, the woman mentioned that she was in a relationship and that her partner would accompany her for the unit viewing at a later date.
Speaking to SAYS, she revealed that the unit was advertised at a monthly rental of RM1,400, with no deposit required for the entire apartment.
However, when arranging an in-person viewing for 9 April, the landlord asked her to come at 8pm and made inappropriate advances, stating, "I want to enjoy your body"
"Can I? I want to try your body. Let us play before you take the unit," the landlord said in a series of messages.
Shocked, the woman responded, "Wtf is wrong with you?" She immediately blocked the person.
Recalling the incident on Reddit, she said, "I was shocked and disgusted... I never gave him any reason to say something like that"
She expressed concern about the potential danger she might have faced if she had gone alone to view the unit.
"It's terrifying to think about," she remarked.
Within an hour of posting her thread, a representative from the rental platform apologised in the comments section and assured her that action had been taken against the landlord.
"First of all, I'm sorry that you have to go through all these," the representative said.
"If you want to make any police report on this landlord, do contact us and we will assist with whatever we can provide."
The woman thanked the representative and expressed her hope that no one else would have to endure a similar experience.
