Photos of a busy Sunway Pyramid have gone viral on social media

On Tuesday, 31 August, community Facebook page Bandar Sunway posted photos of the shopping mall along with a caption in Mandarin that read, "Sunway Pyramid on Hari Kebangsaan today. A scene after months on a break."

The post has garnered over 6,100 shares and 1,400 comments.

The pictures, taken at different parts of the mall, show people bustling around, lining up, and dining in at various food and beverage outlets

It comes as a stark contrast to how the mall was doing during the recent lockdown

The community page had also posted photos of the shopping complex on 1 July, looking dark and deserted on a weekday afternoon.

Malaysian netizens have since voiced mixed reactions towards seeing the busy mall

While most were disappointed and cited COVID-19 concerns, some commented — albeit sarcastically — it was a good sign for businesses to make a comeback.

"Good, go out and spend. Retail sector need you guys," commented a Facebook user.

Another just said, "Speechless."

Meanwhile, this netizen wrote, "Really crazy to put yourselves and family at high risk. Hopefully [you don't] regret after happily spending few hours in the mall. Never learn."

SAYS has reached out to Sunway Pyramid for a comment and was assured that they have taken COVID-19 precautions with all shoppers

"We would like to assure the public that every shopper and staff will have their MySejahtera and temperatures checked upon entry," said Sunway Pyramid general manager, Jason Chin.

"Selected outlets with higher restrictions like [food and beverage], hair salons, and fashion will only allow those who are fully vaccinated to enter their stores."

In addition to that, according to the official Sunway Pyramid Facebook page, it is stated that all adult shoppers are required to have at least one dose of the vaccine and low COVID-19 risk on MySejahtera to enter its premises, while youth between the ages of 12 and 17 are allowed inside the mall unvaccinated.
