While his father is currently in jail over corruption offences, Datuk Seri Najib Razak's son, Datuk Mohammad Nazifuddin Najib, said he is vying for the UMNO Youth deputy chief position

According to The Star, the secretary-general of the Malaysia Olympic Council said that he is interested in contributing his efforts towards UMNO's youth sector and attracting more youngsters, specifically new voters, which he believes will help the party secure its victory in the next general election.

He claimed that attracting the youth is the main challenge of UMNO, but he is ready to take on the challenge.

"I want to contribute my strengths in dignifying sports activities, unearthing talent and skills, improving economic standards, and implementing beneficial programmes for young people."

"I can give back to the party that has contributed so much not only to the Malays, but to all Malaysians," Nazifuddin said in a statement to reporters on Sunday, 29 January.

UMNO will be polling for new office bearers from 1 February to 18 March after the party sacked and suspended numerous members

While no detailed reason was given, action was taken on the members for breaching party disciplinary rules and committing wrongdoings during the 15th General Election (GE15).

Among those who were laid off were former UMNO Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and supreme council member Noh Omar.

UMNO also meted out six-year suspensions to other members, including Sembrong member of parliament (MP) Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, former UMNO Youth deputy chief Shahril Sufian Hamdan, Tebrau division leader Datuk Maulizan Bujang, and former Jempol MP Datuk Seri Mohd Salim.

According to a Facebook post by UMNO supreme council member Datuk Mohd Puad Zarkashi, the party's cleansing was deemed as "bitter but necessary".
