There has been no indication that the RM50 million fine for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest has been paid

Checks by the New Straits Times at the Kuala Lumpur High Court registry and payment counter found no record of the payment as of 3.30pm today, 4 November.

The fine is one of the conditions Najib must fulfil to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest.

If paid, the English daily reported that the fine would be settled via bank draft, with any subsequent developments subject to a court order.

Earlier today, speculation that a representative of Najib would be making the payment drew journalists and photographers to the court complex

However, Najib's lawyer, Muhammad Farhan Muhammad Shafee, said he had not received any instructions regarding the payment.

"I have no instructions and am unsure of the current status. I have not received any instructions regarding the fine.

"I definitely have no information. Even if a third party wants to make the payment, I would be expected to be informed," he said.

Meanwhile, Najib's lead counsel, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, said he could not confirm whether the payment would be made in the coming days

"I cannot predict. As far as I am concerned, as of today, there are no instructions," he said.

On 18 September, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, granted Najib a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his SRC International sentence under house arrest until 23 August 2028, subject to payment of a RM50 million fine and compliance with the other conditions imposed.

The specific conditions, beyond the RM50 million payment, have not been disclosed.

Najib, 73, was sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined RM210 million after the High Court found him guilty on 28 July 2020 of seven charges involving the misappropriation of RM42 million belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd.
