Tun M Says PTPTN Debt Amounts To As Much As The 1MDB Debt
It is allegedly only around RM3bil short of 1MDB's debt.
The Prime Minister said that the amount of student loans owed to PTPTN is as much as the debts of the scandal-ridden 1MDB
During a speech at the Malaysian Student Leaders' Summit on 11 August, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad mentioned that the debt of the National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) currently amounts to RM39bil.
Prior to GE14, Pakatan Harapan promised that it would postpone the repayment of PTPTN loans for graduates with salaries below RM4,000
However, on 31 May, the Education Minister announced that all borrowers would still have to continue paying their loans even if they do not fall within this income group, until the Government finds a way to fulfill its manifesto pledge.
Despite the outstanding debt, the PTPTN chairman announced that all 429,945 loan defaulters have been removed from the travel blacklist
Wan Saiful Wan Jan also mentioned that the removal of the travel blacklist does not mean that the loan defaulters would not have to continue paying back their education loans.
