Tau fu fah entrepreneur and influencer Sunny Coco has donated RM10,000 to Datuk Seri Najib Razak to help pay the RM50 million fine required to fulfil the conditions of his house arrest
In a Facebook statement yesterday, 21 September, Sunny Coco, whose real name is Datuk Seow Chau Pen, said he made the donation to return a favour to Najib, who had helped him in 2012.
"In 2009, I made a mistake and was placed under restricted residence in Manjung.
"That period was the lowest point of my life, and it was also the time I truly stopped to reflect on myself.
"I kept thinking that if one day I could return home and start over, I must be a good person, get back on the right path, and take good care of my parents at home," Seow wrote.
In 2012, when Najib visited Manjung for an event while he was prime minister, Seow sent him a letter of appeal with the help of the local village head, pleading to be allowed to return home early to care for his elderly parents.
"Not long after, I received a notice from the Home Affairs Ministry stating that my restricted residence would end early and that I was allowed to go home," he said.
Seow said he started his tau fu fah business after returning home and slowly built it up over the years
Seow said he has never forgotten how Najib gave him a second chance during one of the most difficult periods of his life.
"Because of that act of mercy, I had the chance to return to my family, and the opportunity to turn over a new leaf in life and work," he wrote.
He said seeing Najib hoping to return home to serve his sentence reminded him of his own experience 14 years ago.
"Back then, when I needed help, he helped me. Today, within my means, I also want to do what little I can to repay that kindness," Seow added.
Seow also said he was not a wealthy man and that the RM10,000 donation was significant to him.
"For every bowl of tau fu fah my business sells, we only make a profit of about RM1. So, RM10,000 to me means 10,000 bowls of tau fu fah," he said.
He stressed that his donation was a personal decision and was not politically motivated.
"This is not about politics, nor am I asking others to make the same decision as me. This is simply a personal debt of gratitude I owe, and I want to repay it in my own way," he wrote.
