Pregnant Cashier Suffers Swollen Eye After Angry Shopper Slaps Her In The Face
The cashier said she had already asked the woman to wait as she tried to fulfil her request.
A cashier was allegedly slapped in the face by an angry shopper at Mid Valley Southkey in Johor Bahru recently
The issue was brought to light by the victim herself, Zuriani Mahmood, who shared a photo of her swollen face and a CCTV recording of the incident on Facebook.
"My dignity was damaged when the customer decided to slap me in front of so many people," she wrote.
The cashier, who works at a chain store in the shopping mall, claimed that the customer had asked to cancel an item off her receipt at the counter, but grew impatient when she was told that she had to wait.
Zuriani explained that she did not have the authorisation to cancel a purchase that had already been scanned into the system
"I had already told her early on that I couldn't cancel the item for her. We had to wait for the person in charge, so it would take some time.
"But when it really did take some time, the woman got angry and said 'I'll just pay for it lah'. I told her not to get angry at me, and she suddenly started cursing at me, accusing me, and called her husband to tell him I was rude," she wrote.
Zuriani added that she is currently pregnant and hopes that the police would take swift action against her assailant.
In the one-minute 23-second CCTV recording, the customer could be seen reaching over the counter to slap the cashier while taking a receipt from her.
The customer, who was accompanied by a man and a young boy, then left the premises.
Johor Bahru South police chief ACP Raub Selamat has since confirmed that they are investigating the incident
He said the 25-year-old victim had lodged a police report the same day after the incident, citing pain and swelling below her left eye as a result of the assault.
According to a police statement, the incident took place at 3.17pm on Saturday, 9 March, when the customer wanted to cancel a purchase.
"The customer was said to be unsatisfied with the time taken by the cashier to cancel the item," said Raub.
The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, which carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.
