It's somewhat going to be the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 6s rolled into one.

Writing for the Forbes, Ewan Spence says, the new iPhone, 4-inch in size, "is expected to replace the iPhone 5S in the portfolio, and update the four-inch form factor of the 5 series with the internal hardware of the 6S series."

However, unlike previous new iterations of the iPhone, the 4-inch iPhone SE won't be packed full of technological innovations.

With their latest handset, Apple is hoping to woo those still clinging to the more than two-year-old 5S or 5C, the last models with the more compact screen.

From a hardware perspective, the iPhone SE is expected to be a formidable device, featuring the same 12-megapixel camera and A9 processor as the iPhone 6s, reports AppleInsider website

That would suggest Apple isn't planning the new 4-inch model as an entry-level model, but more of a mid-range handset. With an A9 chip, the "iPhone SE" would outperform the A8 chip in the iPhone 6, which sells starting at $549.

Why would Apple put the A9 chip in a 4-inch phone?

Putting the A9 in the "iPhone SE" would be a win for everybody. It would give Apple the flexibility to keep the handset in its lineup for awhile, and it would give customers the latest and fastest Apple hardware in a smaller form factor.

While the new iPhone SE will support Apple Pay as well as Live Photos, we are not aware if the 3D Touch feature will also be there

One of the areas where there does not seem to be a huge amount of confidence is the inclusion of 3D Touch in the screen. Introduced with the 6S family, this allows iOS to register the different levels of pressure on the screen and offer alternative options, pop-up menus, or new UI views.

For 3D Touch to really make a difference to iOS, it needs to be on as many devices as possible. If the SE launches without it, the adoption rate is going to be slowed down.
