3 Key AI Features On The New Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 That Are So Damn Cool
The future of live translation is here.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6, revealed at the Galaxy Unpacked event in Paris, France, stands out not just for its foldable design and upgraded hardware but also for its advanced AI features
This latest addition to Samsung's foldable lineup brings several AI-driven functionalities aimed at enhancing user experience. As a Samsung Galaxy S22 user, I also received a slew of new AI updates recently.
We shared our first impressions of the Galaxy Z Flip6, now let's take a closer look at some of its key AI features.
1. AI Translation and Communication
AI Interpreter
Possibly my favourite of the AI updates, the AI interpreter provides real-time translation for face-to-face conversations.
Interpreter shines on the Galaxy Z Flip6. Now, users can communicate in different languages by leveraging the main screen and cover screen to translate conversations in real time. Although not perfect, it's a significant step forward in mobile translation technology.
For now, there are limited language packs you can download for translation purposes, but I'm sure there will be more in future updates. Testing the feature among the team between English and Chinese translations, there were errors, but overall your message is easily understood by all parties.
Call assist
This feature allows you to get real-time translation during voice calls. That means you can call someone who does not speak the same language as you, tap 'call assist', and speak to one another as usual. Your phone will provide a real-time translation on the screen, as well as translated audio as your conversation continues.
Chat assist
Similar to calls, chat assist will translate your chat and text messaging apps for you. It is also able to compose full text based on a snippet or request you've written, change your writing style, get spelling and grammar suggestions, and provide notifications with suggested replies to text messages.
2. AI Assists
Note assist
The Z Flip6 can auto format, summarise, spell check, and translate notes for you. Feels like a given nowadays. However, the real fun is the inclusion of the Sketch to Image tool, which allows you to turn your doodles into art.
"Colour me impressed!" remarked our Head of News when I showed him my flower doodle that magically turned into pop art at the tap of a finger.
It's perhaps a good tool for visual learners and serial doodlers, but I personally don't see myself using the feature much, if at all.
Transcript assist
With AI, you can now create text transcripts, summaries, and translations of your recordings.
Browsing assist
Using Galaxy AI, browsing assist will summarise and translate webpages, making them easy to understand.
Circle to search
Circle to Search is a Google-powered feature that allows you to quickly search for information about what you see on your screen — including images, videos or text by using a simple gesture with your finger.
I took a photo of my colleague's desk, then circled images with my finger, which prompted a Google search for the image.
3. AI Photo Enhancements
Photo assist
The new photo assist updates allow you to move, remove, and resize people and objects, then use AI to fill in the empty areas. Meanwhile, you're also able to transform your portrait photos into fun styles.
Photo ambient wallpaper
If you're into aesthetics, then this is your kind of feature. Using AI, the photo you've selected as your phone wallpaper will change according to the weather based on your location.
Not much to shout about in Malaysia, you'll pretty much either be in the sunshine or the rain. But for countries with four seasons, you can look forward to your wallpaper becoming snowy as well. It also adjusts the look for morning, midday, evening, and night.
Sketch to Image
As mentioned previously, you can use the Sketch to Image feature on Notes. But what's more impressive is the AI's ability to identify and render sketches on photos directly.
Just open up your gallery, select an image, click on the AI sparkle icon, and you'll be able to sketch directly on the image. From there, the AI will render what it thinks you're trying to draw into something somewhat photo-realistic.
We probably played with this feature the most. The results are equal parts hilarious and terrifying. Terrifying in the sense that AI will definitely take over the world for better or worse.
Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 leverages AI to enhance communication, improve camera functionality, enhance communication, and boost productivity
While the features are seriously cool and honestly fun to play with, I would say it's still in its infancy, and as such, may not have as much use in daily life.
That being said, with how fast tech is advancing, Samsung is sure to continue leading the way with their AI enhancements.
It won't be long before AI is cemented into everyday use — just as "Google it" has become a common term, I'm sure "AI it" will soon take over.
