IGP: You Don't Need To Wait 24 Hours Before Filing A Missing Persons Report
He said the claim that one must wait for 24 hours after someone goes missing is a myth.
You do not need to wait 24 hours before filing a missing persons report, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain
According to Razarudin, the claim that one must wait for 24 hours after a family member or acquaintance goes missing to lodge a report is a myth and has no basis, reported Sinar Daily.
"There is no regulation or law that forces you to be patient, calm, or endure for a long period.
"Some say you need to wait 24 hours, 48 hours, or even 72 hours in a state of anxiety and nervousness. This is merely a myth," he was quoted as saying by the daily yesterday, 18 July.
Instead, he said people should immediately go to the police station as soon as their attempts to contact the missing person have failed
Getting in touch with the police as soon as possible can prevent any unfortunate incident from happening to the individual reported missing, according to the IGP.
He also advised the community to continue playing a role in providing information regarding missing persons cases.
"We disseminate information through various mediums related to missing person cases so that the public can help us with the investigation," he added.
The IGP's remarks come amidst inquiries online regarding the standard operating procedures for making a missing persons report
Earlier this week, the police discovered the body of Nur Farah Kartini Abdullah at an oil palm plantation in Hulu Selangor. The 25-year-old Sarawakian had been missing for two days before her family lodged a report.
It was reported that she was murdered by a cop, who is currently on remand.
Separately, police in Negeri Sembilan are also searching for Fiffy Arnatasya Abdullah, a 16-year-old girl who has gone missing since 27 June.
