A bizarre driving mishap threw an American commuter rail network into absolute chaos on Tuesday evening, 2 June, after a motorist mistakenly navigated her sport utility vehicle (SUV) directly onto the elevated tracks of a busy transit line

Sound Transit's prominent 1 Line service in Seattle, Washington, suffered a complete suspension lasting over two hours after the vehicle became completely wedged near the Mount Baker Station.

According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the motorist claimed she was following instructions provided by her GPS navigation system.

This blind technological reliance led the 70-year-old woman to make a catastrophic wrong turn at a street-level intersection

Instead of stopping immediately upon encountering the metal railway lines, she accelerated and drove a "significant distance" — navigating roughly 365 metres up an inclined ramp — before the vehicle eventually bottomed out and became stuck on the northbound line.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, where firefighters from the Seattle Fire Department successfully assisted the elderly woman in exiting her stranded car.

Miraculously, authorities reported no injuries from the high-stakes infrastructure breach

Paramedics transported the driver to a nearby hospital in stable condition to undergo a thorough medical examination as a standard precaution.

Local police officers later confirmed that the motorist was not intoxicated at the time of the incident; consequently, she will not face any formal criminal charges for the massive transit breakdown.

To allow emergency crews to safely extract the wedged vehicle, Sound Transit immediately shut off the high-voltage electrical power supply connected to the railway tracks

This emergency shutdown triggered a massive logistical headache across the city's mass transit system, causing extensive service cancellations.

The incident severely paralysed a vast array of vital commuter routes; these included services connecting SODO to Federal Way, Beacon Hill to Lynnwood, and various loops running through Columbia City and Othello.

Transit management quickly deployed a fleet of emergency bridge shuttle buses to ferry thousands of stranded commuters between the primary stations while recovery crews worked tirelessly to clear the line

Using specialised recovery techniques, emergency responders managed to safely tow the vehicle back down the elevated guideway. Following extensive track inspections to ensure structural safety, regular light rail services finally resumed operations at approximately 9pm.
