Johor is rapidly becoming a vital hub for global computing infrastructure
While big tech usually looks towards Silicon Valley or Shenzhen, fresh research from Epoch AI indicates that Malaysia has entered the heavyweight division of artificial intelligence (AI) hardware.
In a newly published global index tracking raw infrastructure muscle, Johor secured two coveted spots on the list of the world's 10 most powerful AI data centres.

Nusajaya's DayOne facility took sixth place, while DayOne Kempas locked down the eighth position
The top spot is currently held by SpaceXAI's Colossus 2 as of late October.
Expanding the aperture to the planet's top 40 compute hubs, Johor claims four entries on the list.
Curiously, all top 40 spots are held by centres located in the United States and Malaysia
Behind the staggering compute numbers lies an intricate geopolitical puzzle.
According to Epoch AI's estimates, Malaysia now commands roughly 4.5 times the known AI compute capacity of China, which keeps its official operational metrics closely guarded.
However, this explosive rise arrives with a distinct paradox, as the local ecosystem currently lacks domestic enterprise titans driving that scale of demand.
Instead, the hardware serves as a critical bridge. A recent report by The New York Times highlighted that Chinese technology giants, including TikTok parent ByteDance, have channelled operations through Malaysian data centres.
This allows them to leverage cutting-edge NVIDIA processors that remain strictly restricted from direct export into mainland China.
