Emojis, which are small pictorial symbols or icons, play a crucial role in digital communication by conveying emotions, ideas, or representing objects. They have seamlessly integrated into online conversations, enhancing the nuance and context of text-based messages.
In fact, various age groups utilise emojis differently to express the same message. For example, while the laughing emoji is commonly used to respond to something funny, the younger generation might opt for the skull emoji to convey the idea of 'dying from extreme laughter'.
Originally developed in Japan, the term 'emoji' combines the Japanese words for 'picture' (e) and 'character' (moji). Over time, emojis have evolved into a standardised set of characters that are universally recognised and supported across various platforms, social media, and messaging applications.

Meltwater, an analysis and social intelligence tool, has compiled the most popular emojis from 12 platforms, including on Instagram and X, spanning from 1 January to 30 November 2023.
