A foreign student at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tanjung Malim, Perak burst into tears when she had the opportunity to eat pizza for the first time

According to Harian Metro, the touching moment was caught on video by her friend and fellow student, Aizat Zainal Abidin Asri, who had bought the food.

"Be grateful for what you have. Trivial things for us may be special to someone else," he wrote in the caption of the TikTok video that has since garnered close to 500,000 views.

The viral video shows the student from Shaanxi, China, Zhou Yu Zi, fondly known as Serena, crying happy tears after taking a bite of pizza that Aizat had brought along while they were doing laundry at a laundromat.

Aizat shared that Serena reacted that way, not because she came from a poor family, but because she just never had the opportunity to try the food back home

He said she comes from an average family background, but only ate home-cooked meals or local cuisine most of her 28 years of life.

"Her childhood is different from many of ours (Malaysians), where her parents are strict and never ate Western food, even if they went out," he explained, after some netizens questioned the genuineness of the video.

"When I saw her suddenly crying, and asked her if anything was wrong, she told me that it was the first time she had ever eaten pizza in her life, so she was touched to be able to enjoy it," he explained to Harian Metro.

Aizat, who works as a fitness trainer, added that he was grateful to meet Serena at one of his classes. He said they have become friends despite their different backgrounds.

He shared that he is pursuing a master's degree in sports coaching in UPSI, while Serena is pursuing a doctorate degree (PhD) in human resource management.

The comments section was also filled with netizens sharing their experiences of enjoying popular foods for the first time as an adult

"This is like KFC (to me). When I was young, we only ate at KFC if I ranked first place in class. At the time, KFC was already common, but not for my family," said a TikTok user.

Another shared, "This sounds like me too. I used to see many Apollo advertisements when I was small. Only recently that I'm older, I bought a whole box of Apollo snacks and suddenly started to cry."

"'Then, which of your Lord's favours will you deny?' Sometimes it's not because we can't afford it, but the opportunity just somehow doesn't come," another netizen said.
