The family-run business, known for its traditional soy sauce made through an age-old fermentation process, has been a cornerstone of Malaysia's culinary heritage for 111 years.

Founded in 1914, Hup Teck's legacy is deeply intertwined with the history of Gopeng.

The factory, where large earthen urns are used for fermentation, has remained a symbol of the time-honoured methods that have been passed down for generations.

The decision to close was made with a heavy heart by current owner, Low Bak Tong

Due to the lack of a successor and with health issues making it harder for him to continue overseeing operations, the family has decided to shut down, reported the New Straits Times.

Despite being managed by Low, his sister, and his nephew, the lack of someone to carry on the tradition led to this emotional farewell.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, the owners shared the difficult news, expressing their sadness and gratitude for the support they have received throughout the years.

"We are truly humbled and honoured to have served you. Your continued support has been the direct reason for our success," the post read.

With the closure, there's uncertainty about the future of these historic urns, which have been a part of the family's heritage for decades.

Low has expressed his sadness about leaving with the factory's century-old equipment: "It's heartbreaking to think of parting with them," referring to the weathered earthen jars that have been such an essential part of his business.

The closure marks the end of an era for both the family and the people of Gopeng

For many, Hup Teck Soy Sauce Factory is not just a business — it's a part of their memories and the cultural fabric of the area.

Though the doors are closing, the impact of Hup Teck's century-old tradition will surely live on in the hearts of all who have enjoyed its product.

In their post, the owners encouraged customers to visit in the final weeks and purchase whatever stock remains: "We will miss you all very much. Thank you for everything."
