Mid Valley Megamall Apologises Over Escalator Malfunction Incident After Video Goes Viral

Mid Valley Megamall has apologised over the incident involving an escalator malfunction that nearly injured shoppers last Friday, 28 June
Photos and videos of the incident, which showed several escalator steps being dislodged from the landing plate at the Kuala Lumpur mall, went viral over the weekend.
According to a post on Xiaohongshu, China's equivalent of Instagram, a shopper at the scene said they heard a loud noise before witnessing "something popping out" from the escalator.
"I could only run in the opposite direction.
"Fortunately, everyone managed to escape and no one was injured. I still feel scared whenever I think about it," they wrote, sharing four photos of the broken escalator.
Videos of the incident were also shared on the social media platform, attracting over 3,300 likes in some re-uploads.

In a statement issued last Saturday, 29 June, the management of Mid Valley Megamall, IGB Real Estate Investment Trust (IGB-REIT), apologised and promised to take the incident seriously
"We understand that this incident has caused distress to our shoppers and the general public.
"The management will be working closely with the Occupational Safety and Health Department and our maintenance operator, Toshiba Elevator (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, to identify the cause of the malfunction.
"We are relieved that there were no injuries and continue to advise all mall patrons to exercise caution when using the escalators," the New Straits Times quoted the company as saying.
IGB-REIT added that they are committed to ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for all mall visitors.
