Tourist Vows To Never Return To Malaysia After KL Cops Allegedly Extorted Him Of $800
Police have launched an investigation into the allegation.
A tourist has alleged on Reddit that he was extorted of $800 by two cops in Kuala Lumpur while walking back to his hotel near Pudu at 3am, leaving him shaken and vowing never to visit Malaysia again
In a viral post last Saturday, 1 March, the tourist recounted how two officers on patrol stopped him and demanded he hand over his bag, which contained a tablet and some detergent.
The tourist further alleged that the officers forced him to empty his pockets, confiscated his phone and tablet, and demanded he unlock them without proper justification.
Upon discovering an adult Telegram channel and a cryptocurrency exchange app, the officers allegedly accused him of money laundering and warned that he could face a $10,000 fine in court.
"This was my first time dealing with the police — I have never even dealt with the police in my own country — so you can imagine how panicked I was," the tourist wrote, without stating his nationality.
According to him, the officers led him into an alley and demanded $400 each, totalling $800. He didn't specify whether it was in ringgit.
They allegedly took him on their motorcycle to his hotel, handed him his key card, and gave him five minutes to retrieve the money. He claimed he only got his phone, tablet, and wallet back after complying.
The tourist, who said this was his third visit to Malaysia, said the incident "scarred" him and shattered his perception of the country.
"I know it's some bad apples but I am NOT gonna visit Malaysia ever again," he vowed.
However, after visiting the Dang Wangi district police headquarters, he claimed he managed to get his money back and was even allowed to scold the two officers in front of their colleagues.
In response, Dang Wangi police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said no report had been lodged regarding the incident but confirmed that an investigation was underway.
