The feature, introduced as part of OpenAI's "12 Days of OpenAI" campaign, allows users to chat with the AI like they would with a human, and better yet, it's completely free.
This rollout marks the 10th day of the campaign, which has seen a mix of major updates and smaller enhancements, such as Sora and now, this WhatsApp integration.
The service is tailored for those on low-data connections, ensuring accessibility in regions where high-speed Internet remains a luxury.

It's a direct response to Meta's efforts to embed its own AI across its platforms.
Beyond text, users in the US can even have voice conversations with ChatGPT, tapping into OpenAI's advanced Realtime API. This feature is expected to be rolled out globally.
This functionality extends the app's utility, particularly in areas where traditional web-based AI access might be constrained by connectivity issues.

While this is an experimental release, OpenAI has cautioned that limits on usage and availability may apply, particularly during periods of high demand.
Based on our experiments with the feature, ChatGPT is unable to generate images.
For those seeking a richer experience, the full ChatGPT platform remains the go-to option. But with this new feature, OpenAI is clearly aiming to make conversational AI as ubiquitous as the messaging app itself.
Here's how to enable ChatGPT on WhatsApp
STEP 1: Add 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) to your phone's contacts
STEP 2: Launch WhatsApp and start a new chat with ChatGPT from your contact list
STEP 3: Type your message as you would with a friend. You can ask questions, brainstorm ideas, or even seek travel recommendations.
Have fun!
