As the year winds down, Google's Year in Search 2024 reveals a vivid snapshot of what defined Malaysia’s collective consciousness

From unifying sporting moments to key social and economic issues, the data shows what truly resonated with the nation.  

2024 was certainly an eventful year, marked by the Olympics, viral trends, and headline-grabbing news that sparked discussions among Malaysians.

Here are the top trending Google searches in eight categories: Malaysia, Sports, People, News, AI, Movies, TV Shows, and Passing.

Sports dominated searches, with six of the top 10 trending topics tied to major events

Football fever peaked with the UEFA Euro 2024 and AFC Asian Cup, drawing fans to mamak stalls and living rooms alike.

Meanwhile, the Paris Olympics showcased local heroes like Lee Zii Jia, Aaron Chia, and Soh Wooi Yik, who brought home bronze medals and fuelled national pride.

Adding emotional depth, the Paralympics highlighted Malaysia’s resilience, earning five medals and inspiring countless others.

Amid economic pressures, Malaysians searched extensively for government aid

Programmes like Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah and MyKasih offered much-needed relief, reflecting the public's need for financial stability.

Education initiatives like DELIMa and reading programmes such as AINS also made the list, spotlighting the nation’s strides in digital learning and literacy.  

Malaysians turned to entertainment and explored AI innovations

From blockbuster sequels like Inside Out 2 to hit dramas such as Queen of Tears, entertainment brought joy in a challenging year.

On the other hand, AI tools like Gemini and Viggle AI showed Malaysians’ growing interest in adopting cutting-edge tech for both productivity and creativity.
