Netflix Malaysia has announced a price increase across all its subscription plans

The updated rates for Netflix's four subscription plans in Malaysia are as follows:

  • Mobile Plan: Previously RM17, now RM18.90 (increase of RM1.90)
  • Basic Plan: Previously RM28, now RM29.90 (increase of RM1.90)
  • Standard Plan: Previously RM45, now RM49.90 (increase of RM4.90)
  • Premium Plan: Previously RM55, now RM62.90 (increase of RM7.90)

Astro users who subscribe to Netflix through the Astro bundle will only see the price hike starting 1 March 2025.

Here's a breakdown of what the plans offer:

  • Mobile Plan: Ideal for individual users streaming on a single mobile device in 480p resolution.
  • Basic Plan: Allows streaming in 720p on one device, supporting TVs, tablets, and computers.
  • Standard Plan: Designed for families, offering 1080p HD quality on two devices simultaneously.
  • Premium Plan: Delivers the ultimate experience with 4K Ultra HD + HDR content across four devices at once, making it ideal for larger households.

The Premium Plan sees the biggest price hike of RM7.90

Meanwhile, subscribers on the Standard and Premium plans who wish to add users outside their household will still be able to do so for an additional fee of RM13 per user per month.

This extra member feature remains a popular option for those looking to share their account while adhering to Netflix's password-sharing policies.

The price revision is part of Netflix's global strategy to maximise revenue amid increasing competition from other streaming platforms like Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO GO

The company has been actively fine-tuning its pricing and subscription models to remain competitive while improving profitability. Earlier this year, Netflix also cracked down on password sharing, urging users to formalise account sharing by adding extra members.

The February 2023 adjustment, which saw a reduction in the Basic plan's price from RM35 to RM28, was an attempt to appeal to a broader audience. However, the current hikes could signal a shift in Netflix's approach, focusing on higher margins rather than subscriber growth alone.
