"She Won Because She Is Hardworking" — Michelle Yeoh's Mum Sheds Tears For Oscar Win

Michelle Yeoh has made all of Malaysia and the Asian community proud with her recent Oscar win — but the proudest of them all is her mum
Datin Janet Yeoh was seen shedding tears of joy when the announcement of her daughter's win was made. Janet and her other family members were watching the Academy Awards live at a special viewing party held at Dadi Cinema, Pavilion KL, this morning, 13 March.
Among the guests to witness the historical moment included Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, models and actresses Amber Chia, Nasha Aziz, and Sangeeta Krishnasamy, as well as Women, Family and Community Development Minister, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
Immediately after her win, the actress was seen on a phone call with her mum to celebrate
"I am very happy with Michelle's success," Janet told The Star after the Oscars broadcast.
"She won the award because she is hardworking. You can see that in the way she fights in movies, the way she performs. She is very beautiful, talented, and smart also," she added.
In a tweet by CNA reporter Melissa Goh, Yeoh was seen on the phone with her mum, sending flying kisses and holding up her Oscar award, while several other family members and friends cheered her on.Michelle Yeoh made history by winning an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) at the 95th Academy Awards on 12 March
She is the first Malaysian and the first Asian to win in the category.
The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Film Editing, Best Directing, and Best Picture, among others. Out of the 11, the film won seven Oscar awards.
"I have to dedicate this (award) to my mum, all the mums in the world because they are really the superheroes, and without them, none of us would be here tonight. I'm taking this home to her. She's watching right now in Malaysia, KL, with my family and friends. I love you guys. I'm bringing this home to you," Michelle said during her acceptance speech.
"For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof that dreams — dream big — and dreams, do come true. And ladies, don't let anybody tell you, you are ever past your prime... This is history in the making," she added during her speech.
