If you've been to KLIA Terminals 1 or 2 recently, you might have spotted new lanes using QR codes for immigration clearance

The Immigration Department has added 40 autogates with advanced QR code technology to help reduce congestion at Malaysia's entry points.

Malaysia is now using this system, just like Singapore, Japan, and some European countries, to make immigration faster and more secure.

Here's everything you need to know about the new MyBorderPass system:

1. What are QR code lanes?

These lanes are part of a new initiative to speed up immigration clearance. Passengers use a QR code generated through the MyBorderPass app instead of manually presenting their passports.

2. How does it work?

  • Download the MyBorderPass app on the Google Play Store (Android) or App Store (Apple).
  • Input your personal and travel details to generate a unique QR code.
  • At the immigration autogates, scan the QR code to verify your identity — no need to hand over your passport.

3. What's the benefit for travellers?

  • Faster processing: Clearance takes just 5 to 7 seconds compared to the usual 15 to 25 seconds.
  • Less congestion: Perfect for busy travel periods like festive seasons.
  • Convenience: Automates data retrieval for a smoother experience.
  • 4. Who can use it?

    The facility is available to:

    • Malaysian citizens
    • Citizens of 63 eligible countries, including Australia, Brunei, Canada, China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, UK, and US

    5. Can you still use the manual counters?

Yes. Manual counters and existing automated gates are still available for those who prefer traditional immigration clearance.

    6. Do you still need your passport?

Yes, you still need to carry your passport as it's required for the rest of your journey, even if you're using the QR code lanes.

    7. What about foreign nationals?

    • Foreign nationals must still submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, except for Singaporeans who are exempt.
    • Entry information will be cross-checked against their passport's biometric data.

The announcement of the additional gates was made last year:
