Feeling fancy and craving for sushi? There's a restaurant in Damansara Heights that'll instantly make you feel like you've stepped into Japan.

As you enter Hoshun Sushi Kaiseki, you'll be greeted with 8,000 paper cranes, each one folded by hand, hanging from the ceiling above the bar.

If sitting at the sushi counter is not your thing, the restaurant has rooms separated by shoji (Japanese sliding doors and partitions) so that you can enjoy your meal and company in private.

Optionally, you can sit at the main area, right in front of the chef, as you watch them skilfully slice, plate, and craft each sushi piece to perfection.

We tried the 'Sakura' omakase lunch package. It came with appetisers, chawanmushi, 10 seasonal sushi, soup, and dessert.

As we sat down, we were offered hot towels and each person's seat had its own Hoshun foam hand sanitiser. The waiters and waitresses stood not too far away, always on the ball if we needed anything.

With its dark walls, soft lighting, and well-thought-out Japanese decor, the restaurant gave off a peaceful ambience — we almost forgot that the weather was blazing hot outside during our meal.

From start to finish, you'll know you are well taken care of and are paying for the entire experience, not just the food.

Our chef for the day, chef Hiro who comes from Japan, gracefully made the sushi while describing the names of each piece as he handed them to us.

Some of what we tried included Akami, Ikura, and Engawa. As it is an omakase dining experience – letting the chef decide what to offer – it should be noted that what you get also depends on the season, and all of the sushi are made with fish and other ingredients air-flown in straight from Japan.

During the course, our favourite was Chef Hiro's specialty: smoked flounder, which had a buttery flavour that instantly melted in our mouths. And I mean, it truly MELTED.

I cannot emphasise enough that this was one of the best sushis I've ever eaten to date.

We ended the course with seaweed soup and a scoop of pumpkin ice cream that tasted heavenly. As an ice cream lover, I've never tasted something quite like that before and it was a refreshing end to our lunch.

Overall, Hoshun Sushi Kaiseki is all about the experience

If you're looking for a date night spot or a place to celebrate a special occasion, the restaurant has an ideal atmosphere.

Aside from the 'Sakura' lunch package (RM380), there's also the 'Sugi' seven-piece seasonal sushi package (RM280) and 'Ran' dinner package (RM450) that includes meat dishes, and other premium omakase experiences.

If you're not in the mood for omakase, the menu has donburi and pot rice, as well as an extensive selection of Japanese alcohol.
