Malaysia Will Soon See Michelin-Starred Restaurants In Kuala Lumpur & Penang
The first Michelin Guide selections will be unveiled in December this year!
The Michelin Guide has finally announced its arrival in Malaysia and it is on the lookout for the best restaurants and eateries in Kuala Lumpur and Penang
In a press conference today, 20 October, the globally-renowned food guide announced its entry into Malaysia as it recognises the country's food culture and bold flavours, stemming from our multiethnic influences and heritage.
"We are ecstatic to welcome Kuala Lumpur and Penang to the Michelin Guide family," said Michelin Guide international director, Gwendal Poullennec.
"This upcoming selection will unveil a new page in Asia's gastronomic prowess, spotlighting the wonders of Malaysian cuisine and the abundance of homegrown culinary talents."
"Our famously anonymous inspectors are already in the field to experience this colourful culinary scene and find the best local gems," he added.
The director said they promise to highlight the diverse gastronomy of Malaysia, and the company will be unveiling its much-awaited restaurant selections in December 2022
The Michelin Guide awards restaurants its revered stars through independent restaurant inspections, where:
- One Michelin star is for "high-quality cooking that is worth a stop"
- Two Michelin stars are for "excellent cooking that is worth a detour"
- Three Michelin stars are for "exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey"
The inspections will be done based on their five international selection criteria:
- Quality of the ingredients
- Mastery of cooking
- Harmony of flavour
- Personality of the chef through the cuisine
- Consistency both over time and across the entire menu
The company also ensures the consistency of its gourmet standards across the world.
"A star in Kuala Lumpur will be the same as a star in Paris or in New York," said Michelin experiences director of communications, Elisabeth Boucher-Anselin, during the press conference today.
Besides the coveted star ratings, the guide will also excitingly include the popular Bib Gourmand category
The Bib Gourmand category awards establishments that provide quality and affordable meals that many hawker stalls and street food vendors in Singapore and Thailand have notably received.
"The Michelin Guide is dedicated to fostering a culture of travel and conceiving unforgettable experiences accessible to all diners on all budgets," said Poullennec.
