Biker Arrested After Video Of Him Doing Wheelies Around KL City Centre Goes Viral
The man had been charged and convicted with a similar offence in 2018.
A man was arrested on Sunday, 16 May, after a video of him performing wheelie stunts on his motorcycle around Kuala Lumpur went viral online
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief ACP Zulkefly Yahya said the 21-year-old man was arrested at 7pm on Sunday, reported Bernama.
Wheelies are stunts where motorcycles are ridden with the front wheel raised above the ground for a short distance.
According to Berita Harian, the arrest comes after police tracked a video showing a man — wearing a bright-coloured baju Melayu, dark trousers, and slippers — performing wheelies with a Yamaha RXZ motorcycle. The video was uploaded on Instagram and TikTok.
It was reported that the 28-second long video — with the caption 'The Real Raya in Kuala Lumpur' — was uploaded on the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, 13 May.
"In that video, the suspect can be seen doing 'wheelie' actions in several highway locations around Kuala Lumpur as well as AKLEH (Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway) highway," Zulkefly said in a statement yesterday, 17 May.
Initial investigations found that the suspect was charged and convicted with a similar offence in 2018
Following the conviction, he was sentenced to 12 months of community service order and his licence was suspended for two years in 2020, reported The Star.
"The man was arrested under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving," Zulkefly was quoted saying by Bernama.
He added that, "The motorcycle and clothes used in the video were also seized for further investigation."
The ACP disclosed that police are still looking for the individual who recorded the video
The individual will be investigated under Section 111 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for abetment once they are found, he added.
Zulkefly also urged all road users to obey the law and not endanger oneself or others while on the road.
