A Twitter user who works as a barista is getting flak for bragging about being able to upsell drink add-ons to "stupid" customers

The tweet came up after another Malaysian Twitter user highlighted how an international coffeehouse chain has a "cunning" way of upselling their food.

The user shared how a cashier had once asked them how many slices of cheese they would like to add to their order — instead of asking whether they would like the additional cheese at all — prompting them to pay for an add-on.

"I asked for beef ragu and the cashier asked me 'Single or double cheese?', instead of 'Would you like cheese with it?'. People who don't know [the tactic] will definitely pick the single cheese option," they said.

Many Twitter users replied that they have also experienced the same thing, while some advised others to be more attentive when making their orders, as cashiers are often trained to upsell their products.

Among the replies, however, one Twitter user unsympathetically replied, "As a barista myself, I know how to choose some 'stupid' customers and push add-ons"

The tweet drew criticism from hundreds of Twitter users, who started tagging AI Twitter bot accounts to roast him for his attitude

Meanwhile, others advised the barista to take down the tweet for his own well-being

"This isn't going to age well, man. Strongly advised to delete, learn what not to tweet, and move on with life," said a netizen.

"As an ex-Baskin Robbins staff and also a considerate person, I'll ask the [customer], not 'push add-ons' onto them," said another, who said it is better to be considerate in the long run to retain customers.
