'Sex Cult' Couple Accused Of Insulting Islam Are Crowdfunding To Make Their RM40,000 Bail
The pair were said to be struggling to cough up the funds to post bail because "their mobile devices and bank cards had not been returned to them".
The couple who were charged for their controversial stunt at the Crackhouse Comedy Club in the capital are resorting to crowdfunding to make their RM40,000 bail
A report by The Vibes stated that the couple's legal team will be launching a campaign today, 15 July, and that there were members of the public who are interested in donating.
Siti Nuramira Abdullah, the woman who undressed her baju kurung and removed her headscarf on stage at the comedy club in a viral video, was charged with causing religious disharmony at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on Wednesday, 13 July.
The bail for the 28-year-old was fixed at RM20,000 after it was lowered from an initial RM50,000.
As for her partner, 38-year-old Alexander Navin Vijayachandran, who allegedly recorded and uploaded Nuramira's stunt on social media, was charged with two counts of improper use of network facilities or network service.
The court set his bail at RM20,000 in one surety as well.
The couple's lawyer, R Sivaraj, was quoted as saying that the crowdfunding initiative was launched after the accused were unable to gather funds in the two-day period they were given
He told The Vibes, "We decided to set up the GoFundMe initiative since nothing has happened after their family and friends were given two days (to gather funds)."
The pair were said to be struggling to cough up the funds to post bail because "their mobile devices and bank cards had not been returned to them".
"Their friends are trying to help them out, but a sum of RM40,000 for both of them will require time and generous friends," said Sivaraj.
Nuramira is awaiting to be transferred to the Kajang Women's Prison
According to The Vibes, she is currently being held in the Beranang satellite prison in Selangor.
Meanwhile, Alexander is at the Kuala Kubu Baru satellite prison and will be taken to the Sungai Buloh Prison.
The duo are being investigated for and accused of insulting Islam after pulling off the act at the Crackhouse Comedy Club. The video quickly went viral, with many quarters condemning their actions, including the establishment itself.
The couple were also subsequently banned from the premises and a police report was lodged. However, this was not enough for the club to avoid an investigation by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
The co-founder of the Crackhouse Comedy Club was also arrested yesterday, 14 July, over videos of his own stand-up comedy routines:
