Woman Wakes Up In Coffin Days After Family Presumes Her Dead, Only To Die Again

A family in China's Hebei province was stunned after discovering their elderly relative was still alive inside a refrigerated coffin, a full day after they believed she had died

The woman, who was in her 70s, had recently been sent home for end-of-life care following a lengthy battle with cancer and cerebral thrombosis.

Believing she had succumbed to her illnesses on 8 September, her relatives placed her inside a chiller coffin, South China Morning Post reported.

The following evening, the family heard faint humming sounds coming from the coffin

Prompted by the woman's daughter-in-law, the family quickly removed her from the unit.

When extended relatives finally arrived on 11 September, they found the elderly woman conscious and able to open her eyes.

A local village official noted that the coffin had been set to a temperate cooling function rather than a deep-freeze mode. This setting likely prevented a fatal drop in body temperature and kept the woman alive.

Medical experts suggested she had slipped into a state of "apparent death"

According to the Health Times, this physiological condition is characterised by a deeply slowed metabolism and a profound coma, making vital signs exceedingly difficult for laypeople to detect.

Despite the brief resurgence, the woman remained in a critical state and was unable to consume food or water.

She died later the same night, and her funeral proceeded as initially planned on 13 September

The family's decision to share the bizarre ordeal online drew widespread scepticism across mainland social media platforms, which prompted a firm defence from the original poster.

"No one would fabricate a story about the life and death of their own family member," the relative said.
