A fatal road crash on Jalan Gelugor, Penang, last week claimed the life of a young man and left another individual injured. The incident involved a 40-year-old Vietnamese woman who allegedly fled the scene.

Police later tracked down the female driver and detained her for investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers reckless or dangerous driving resulting in death.

The victims were walking home after dinner with a friend when they were struck by the woman's car. Police suspect she was driving under the influence.

One victim, an 18-year-old SMJK Heng Ee SPM graduate, died at the scene, while the other sustained minor injuries and was admitted to Penang General Hospital, according to China Press.

The victim's family claims that since the accident, the driver has not apologised and instead displayed an arrogant and unremorseful attitude

According to the victim's sister, who was the first family member to arrive at the scene, the Vietnamese driver — who spoke Mandarin — showed no guilt when confronted.

Instead of apologising, the driver refused to hand over her identification documents to the police.

"When I asked if my brother's life didn't matter, she replied, 'Your brother's life is your problem. Right now, my life is my concern,'" the sister claimed, as reported by China Press.

The sister also shared that bystanders were outraged by the woman's alleged lack of remorse, with some attempting to assault her. However, police at the scene intervened to control the situation.

The victim's father, Chong Fook Shee, has vowed to take legal action against the woman allegedly responsible for his son's death

Chong said his son had just graduated from high school last year and had a promising future ahead of him, adding: "A bright future awaited him, but she took his precious life away."

Chong, who runs an electrical engineering business, shared that his son had expressed interest in taking over the family business but wanted to wait for his SPM results before making a final decision.

"If his results were good, he planned to further his studies at a college or university. If not, he considered retaking his exams. But now, all those dreams are gone," he lamented.

He said he will pursue legal action to hold the driver fully accountable.

The victim's funeral procession was held recently, as friends and family gathered to pay their final respects.
