The Royal Malaysia police (PDRM) will be fining local influencer Gatita Yan's boyfriend, Tay Wee Shen, for putting his BMW on autopilot before falling asleep while driving on the highway

According to Sin Chew Daily, Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said that PDRM will be detaining and issuing a fine against Tay when they find him.

The police are still investigating the whereabouts of the two, unsure if they are still in Ipoh, where they were seen heading towards on Tuesday, 28 March.

In an interview with the Mandarin daily, Yusri said that Tay's act of driving while asleep behind the wheel is dangerous and illegal.

The issue came to light when local DJ Gatita Yan uploaded a story on her Instagram showing off Tay driving while sleeping soundly with both his hands off the wheel

The Internet celebrity and DJ showed off her boyfriend behind the wheel with not just with his hands off the wheel but also his feet off the pedals, reported The Sun Daily.

The Instagram Stories have since been deleted but not before locals screen recorded them, reporting the issue to the authorities.

Yusri has since said that he would direct the traffic division in the area to detain them.

PDRM then clarified the legality surrounding autonomous vehicles, refusing to tolerate any acts that may endanger the lives of other road users

"Drivers are allowed to activate the automatic driving function, but they cannot sleep while driving, and both hands must be on their steering wheels at all times to ensure safety," the Perak police chief told Sin Chew Daily.

"The police will investigate under Section 10 of the Road Transport Act 1987 if any person is found to be driving without their hands on the steering wheel," added Yusri.

Yan and Tay have yet to acknowledge or address this matter, regularly updating their Instagram Stories with their daily routines.
